About

The cultural movement known as the Renaissance and the profound affect it had on the intellectual and artistic life of early modern Europe, continues to provide inspiration for new scholars across a wide range of disciplines. ‘New Directions in the Renaissance’ is an interdisciplinary conference which aims to provide a forum for those studying the Renaissance in its birthplace and heartland, Italy, to reflect on the broad range of topics and themes which characterize study in this field. The conference offers the opportunity for postgraduate students and early career researchers from universities across the UK to explore emerging areas of enquiry and to present their work in a constructive, friendly environment.

The conference has been organised by three PhD Candidates in History and History of Art at the University of Edinburgh – Irene Mariani, Jacqueline Spicer, and Natalie Lussey – who are each carrying out research on Italian culture in the Renaissance.  It has received funding and support from the Society of Renaissance Studies, the Edinburgh Centre of Medieval and Renaissance Studies and the Edinburgh College of Art.

See the ‘Programme’ and ‘Abstracts’ sections for details about the conference, contributors and papers. To sign up for the event click on the ‘Registration’ tab and follow the instructions.
